FAIRFAX, VA — In her first solo appearance on behalf of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, First Lady Michelle Obama delivered an impassioned speech at George Mason University that highlighted the stakes of Election 2016 and implored young voters to make it to the polls on November 8th despite the increasingly negative tone of the campaign in recent weeks:

“We can’t afford to be tired or turned off — not now. Because while this might feel like a time of uncertainty and division, I have never felt more hopeful about the future of this great nation.”

Student Media was on hand to cover the event, with students producing print, video, and online content. Pick up a copy of today’s Fourth Estate print edition to read MacKenzie Reagan’s article and check out Mason Votes for a recap of Michelle’s speech and an online gallery with original photography by Mimi Albano and Leslie Steiger. Big thanks to all our students and staff who turned out content quickly after Friday’s event!

WGMU Summer Radio Camp Recap

Radio Camp 2016 Over the summer Student Media welcomed 27 middle and high school students (our largest group ever!) to Mason’s Fairfax campus for the 21st Annual WGMU Summer Radio Camp. Held every summer since 1996, WGMU Summer Radio Camp consists of two, one-week sessions and is open to local students in grades 6-12. Campers gain basic on-air broadcasting skills by learning how to produce a live music show, commercials, and news announcements in WGMU’s Johnson Center studios. This year’s camp included a behind-the-scenes look into commercial radio with a field trip to Arlington Independent Media’s WERA 96.7 FM.

Thank you to all the 2016 campers and their families — we hope you had as much fun as we did!
